Marka masks are made from hardwood, copper and brass sheeting and colourful cotton tassels. Their elongated faces are often more or less completely covered with metal.
The Marka are a Mande subgroup whose settlement region extends from the north of the Bamana (southwestern Mali), to the Senegalese border. Along the Niger River, the Marka use their masks in ceremonies related to fishing and farming.
