Intricate, handmade and light weight winnowing basket from Zimbabwe. They were used for separating the corn husk; after maize has been ground it was tossed on these baskets and any rough pieces were then removed. The Zimbabwe type baskets are characterized by their flatness, whereas the Zambian version is deeper with a broader square “foot”. Although they originate from the same, Batonga tribe, separation of the two groups has led to a slight differentiation in basket design.
