The Makonde are an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. The chair is hand-carved from one piece of wood.Various tribes in Tanzania make similar chairs with the back, seat and legs all carved from one piece of wood. They are generally very upright in style with geometric incised design and sometimes a head surmounting the backrest. This represents an ancestor who may be called upon for protection, prosperity or good luck.
