These stools were hand-carved from one single piece of wood by the Tonga people, a Bantu ethnic group of southern Zambia and neighbouring northern Zimbabwe. It was intended to use for the elderly, symbolizing their status within the group.The stools are small, but have monumental sculptural forms, in a large variety of styles. Tonga stool forms are quite distinct. Most stools are embellished with geometric supports and bases.
